Let the truth be told I am not a big supporter of e-books even though I wrote an entry earlier with regards to the advantages of them. Though I am not a fan, e-books are good for one thing, and that is establishing yourself as an expert. If you have a particular niche, you should write an e-book and market it, so that you may establish yourself as an expert in your particular field. Other than that, traditional printing of books is the way to go, whether it is through a traditional printing company or print on demand.

For me the disadvantage of e-books is the effect on the eyes. It can be quite straining trying to read a book on a bright screen. Reading small booklets about 30-50 pages is not as bad, but trying to read a novel or theological treatise that is more that 200 pages long can be a problem for me. Besides that, I love to have the book in my hand and ruffle through the newly bound pages and enjoy that new book smell. Although I am not alone, there are people on the other side of the spectrum that prefer e-books. Why? It is because we live in a “I want it now society.” It is not just food anymore that people want right away.

Michael Hyatt, the president of Thomas Nelson Publishers believes that sometime in the future, e-publishing will become more of a standard way of providing books. He states, “I am convinced that we are only one device away from a digital publishing tsunami.” Oh my, I hope not. I do believe that e-publishing will become a big thing, but I am hoping that it will not trump our traditional ways.

Therefore, before taking the plunge into e-publishing, one should weigh the cost. Check out Phil Davis’ article entitled “ebooks vs. printed books.” He lays out the pros and cons of each type of publishing. If you want to establish yourself as a consultant in your field, I highly recommend e-books because they are fast and they can be distributed quickly. On the other hand, if you are thinking of publishing a novel, a theological treatise, or some other large work, I recommend doing it the old fashion way. Your book will be more respected if you do.

E-books have become more and more popular in the recent years. Although some people prefer a printed book in their hand, e-books are still in demand. If you have a niche for giving advice on a particular topic, then you can write an e-book. E-books can range from an assortment of topics. They can be written as a how-to, a novel, theology, history, or whatever.

Writing and publishing e-books gives you an advantage over trying to sell your product to a traditional publisher. One advantage is that there are no production costs. Majority of publishers ask for hundreds to thousands of dollars up front as well as mandatory printing of books for stock. The disadvantage of this is that the value of your book could go down if there is a lull in purchasing.

Since we live in an age where people want it right away, another advantage of e-books is the quick access after purchase. E-books can be purchased for immediate download. There is no waiting for 3 days to 2 weeks before the product arrives. Especially if it is a book that your readers really want right away and just cannot wait.

Now, if you are intrigued by technology, you can use it to your advantage. MP3 players, IPods, and PDA’s have become somewhat of a necessity for some of us. Also, these devices can do more than just carry files and play music. If you make your e-books accessible for a PDA, then people can download and read it on their way to work, if they take public transportation. One last advantage of e-books is the inclusion of online resources. If there is a hyperlink that you refer to in your e-book, then the reader can click on the link and be taken to a webpage from your document.

So then, the production of e-books is cheap and easy on the pocket. Your only concern would be to dedicate time to writing your e-book. You already have an idea of an e-book project? Then don’t hesitate. Start on it right away and you could be publishing in no time. Also, check out the website How to Create Ebooks and Ebook Marketing. They have a plethora of information on creating, designing, and marketing your e-book.

One of the tools that a self-publishing author must have is good email marketing software. I highly recommend 1-2-All which was developed by Active Campaign. Most have features that they all should have, but I will point out a few unique features from 1-2-All that makes it a step above the rest.

Features: Email Piping, Fetch HTML for your mailings, Send Last Message, Reason for unsubscribing:

Email piping is a way in which subscribers can subscribe or unsubscribe by email. When an email is sent to a pop account, the piping script will activate and immediately send an email to the subscriber to confirm his/or her subscription or unsubscription. A different pop account will need to be setup for subscriptions, unsubscriptions, and even bounces.

Fetch HTML:

"On the message composition page you have the option to enter a URL to fetch for your HTML mailings. If entered the system will take the HTML from the URL you entered and use it as your message content."

Send last message is not a feature that is found on most systems. It allows you to send the latest newsletter to a new subscriber without sending it to the whole list.

Reason for unsubscribing gives you an advantage of knowing what the subscriber did not benefit from your list. This will help you to better target your content.

To get a broader perspective on what this great software is capable of, check out Active Campaign’s website: http://www.activecampaign.com/

I wish I could say that "blogging is publishing" was something that I came up with on my own, but that is not the case. However, I have been pondering on this phrase for a while and decided to write an entry on my thoughts. The phrase is actually taken from what Lulu.com started in 2005 with a project called blook. "What is a blook," you ask? Taken from their definition, they define a blook as "a printed and bound book, based on a blog (cf. web log) or website."

So then, basically, a blook is a book that was developed from ideas or themes taken from a published up-to-date blog or website . This concept seems to be a great idea. There are tons of people out there on the world wide web who are blogging. The bloggers range from CEO's to churches. There is a wealth of content out there and many of these people take the time to write good, thought provoking content for their readers.

Are you writing a book or thinking of a new book project, but you are fresh out of ideas or you have writers block? Check out the blogosphere and read what others are writing. You may find the next big thing, especially if you find a few blogs writing on the same subject. I am confident that you will come up with some great ideas.
